The Devil s Arithmetic By Jane Yolen And Code Name Verity...

Throughout The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein there were many obvious similarities but also several key differences. While analyzing the two stories, comparisons between characters, setting, point of view and theme became apparent. Both stories discuss characters who overcame a struggle in their lives. These historical fiction pieces help readers understand the hardships of certain historical events and the reality of life for people living in those eras. The connections between stories will help readers make connections between important events of the past. Both The Devil’s Arithmetic and Code Name Verity have similar settings, yet the are also different. In The Devil’s Arithmetic, there are three settings. One is Grandma Belle and Grandpa Will’s apartment in New Rochelle, New York (1980). The other setting is the shtetl when Hannah is transported to 1942, and becomes Chaya. Lastly, the third setting is the concentration camp that is in Poland, and the year is still 1942. In Code Name Verity, there are also two settings. A setting is the Nazi headquarters in Ormaie, France in 1943. The other setting is the place the prisoners are held captive, this place is a old hotel in England. Both the the novels are different in setting, and they are not very similar. Overall, there are some very crucial things to know about the settings of The Devil’s Arithmetic and Code Name Verity.
